THC-P — All You Need to Know about it

by | May 4, 2022 | Our Most Helpful CBD Blogs

If you want to get “high” THC-P is the place to be!  Because it’s around 30 times stronger than Delta-9 THC.  You read that right, it’s 30 times stronger than D9 and it’s federally legal as long as it’s derived from hemp.

Most people know that Marijuana gives you a “high” and have learned that THC is the active chemical in the plant that produces that high. Now that we are studying the cannabis plant and it’s been going more mainstream, the education and information is finally getting out and more people are learning about the other cannabinoids within cannabis.

Education is power and most marijuana users believe that Delta-9 THC is the most potent psychoactive THC available, but that is not the case. Legalizing hemp in 2018 allowed colleges and universities to finally start getting funded to start studying Cannabis and now it seems like researchers find some new THC compound coming out of the Cannabis plant every other day. For instance, you might be aware of Delta-8 and Delta-10 THC now, which are cousins of Delta-9 THC with slightly different makeups with comparable psychoactive properties.

CBD, CBG, CBN, Delta-8 THC, Delta-9 THC, Delta-10 THC, are all different cannabinoids that our wonderful cannabis plants create and they all have their own medicinal properties with different strengths.  Delta-9 THC is the staple and concentrations over .03% in flower or a product is what the US government has made federally illegal. Delta-8, Delta-10 THC and THC-O are all psychoactive and federally legal when derived from hemp.  THC-O is 3-5 times more powerful than Delta-9 and here’s another new one…THC-P. The world calls it “Tetrahydrocannabiphorol” or “THC-P.” This article will disclose all you need to know about THC-P as a Cannabis enthusiast.

What is THC-P Tetrahydrocannabiphorol?

Tetrahydrocannabiphorol, also known as THC-P, is an organic Cannabinoid and THC analog present in several Cannabis strains. It was recently discovered in 2019, so there is not much official research on it yet. Researchers are exploring this product’s safety potency and safety using animal cells and in vitro cell cultures for now.

Although THC-P exists naturally, it is present in Cannabis plants in meager amounts. Manufacturers and researchers can isolate and extract THC-P from Marijuana and Hemp using chromatography techniques.

The ability of THC-P to bind with Cannabinoid receptors 33 times more strongly than conventional Delta-9 THC is mainly responsible for its more potent nature. The psychoactive effects occur as the Endocannabinoid receptors activate.

Discovery of THC-P:

Scientific Reports Journal first disclosed THC-P to the world on 30th December 2019 via open nature research. The journal titled it with its reference to being a novel phytocannabinoid from the Cannabis Sativa plant with psychoactive activity that is higher than Delta-9 THC.

An Italian researchers’ team was conducting a study using advanced liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques on Cannabis. This Cannabis sample came from the Military Chemical Institute in Italy and was used to measure potencies. These precise techniques allowed the researchers to study plant matters precisely. During this study, THC-P hit them by a total accident. Once the THC-P came out of the shell, scientists discovered that it resembled THC a lot. The alkyl side chain is responsible for the effects because of its interaction with cannabinoid receptors. This alkyl chain is similar in both THC and CBD compounds.

What is the difference between Delta-9 THC and THC-P?

Delta-9 THC and THC-P have the relatively same physical structure. However, they differ entirely when it comes to the number of Carbons in the alkyl chain. This difference in the number of Carbon thus makes the length of the alkyl chain vary by two carbons. It is so because the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain of THC is five, while that in THC-P is seven. It is the long chain of THC-P that gives it a more substantial binding ability than THC and other THC analogs. The THC compound with at least three links may bind at the binding site of CB1 receptors. Nonetheless, the binding strength peaks when there are eight links before reversing.

Does THC-P get you High?

YES! The high-inducing capability of THC-P is much higher than that of any other Cannabinoid. It is 33 times more potent than Delta-9 THC.  Researchers do not recommend driving heavy machinery and automobiles under the influence of any psychoactive cannabinoid.

How does THC-P Work?

As we have discussed earlier, the binding of THC-P with the Endocannabinoid receptors is mainly responsible for its effects. There are two types of Endocannabinoid receptors in the body, i.e., Type 1 (CB1) and Type 2 (CB2) receptors. The psychoactive properties are mainly because of their interaction with CB1 receptors. The effects of THC and THC-P are similar because of their similar action on CB1 receptors. THC-P binds to the Endocannabinoid receptors 33x more than Delta-9, which activates the psychoactive effects in our brains and tells our brains to produce the chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and others that create that high feeling.

How do Cannabis plants make THC-P?

Cannabigerol acid (CBGA) is the mother of all phytocannabinoids. No matter how different the phytocannabinoid are, they possess different properties, and they begin as CBGA, and so does THC-P. CBGA comes into existence through a complex reaction between general pyrophosphate and olivetolic acid. The action of enzymes then converts it into further substances like THCA, CBCA, and CBDA.

All the Cannabinoids are basically present in acidic form as far as they are casually chilling in the raw Cannabis. However, they start converting into their respective Cannabinoids when they come in contact with heat. Decarboxylation takes place that converts THCA into THC, CBDA into CBD, etc.

THC-P is no different when we talk about its manufacturing inside the Cannabis plant. It is initially THC-PA coming out of CBGA. This THC-PA gets converted into THC-P when the product is heated as the decarboxylation occurs.

However, another difference regarding THC-P and other Cannabinoids in the Cannabis plant comes up. THC-P, unlike other Cannabinoids, is present in small amounts in plants. That is why researchers were not so quick at discovering this substance.

How is THC-P made in Laboratory?

The scientific studies on THC-P are at their peak, and thus researchers need much more THC-P than the Cannabis plant offers. Thus, the only option was to produce THC-P in the laboratory. Since the THC-P from Marijuana is illegal, scientists have to develop Hemp-derived THC-P in laboratories.

The first paper regarding THC-P was published in 2019. The manufacturing process that is used today got its inspiration from the techniques in that paper. However, there is no detailed information available on the lab manufacturing of THC-P because the companies do not like to disclose much. It makes it essential to ask for the third-party lab testing report before ordering your THC-P product.

A third-party lab testing report is also essential to know what you are getting and expect the results accordingly.

What is the concentration of THC-P in Cannabis?

Both the THC-P and the compound that researchers discovered with it, i.e., CBDP, are present in insufficient quantities in the Cannabis plant. The Italian strain FM2 is known to have maximal amounts of THC-P, and the Cannabinoid profile of FM2 indicates the following concentrations:

  • CBD=56 mg/g
  • CBDP=243 mcg/g
  • THC=39mg/g
  • THC-P=29mcg/g

The concentration of THC and CBD is in milligrams, while that of respective Cannabiphorols is in micrograms.

THC-P concentration in other strains of Cannabis is still unknown; however, we can expect to be available for public evaluation soon.

Can I pass my drug test with THC-P?

The simple answer is NO. You cannot pass your drug test if you have been on any dose of THC-P recently. Moreover, it takes much longer for it to dissociate from the Endocannabinoid receptors because of its higher binding strength. You need to stop taking THC-P months earlier before the test so that there can be any chance of clearing the test. However, one can never be sure if he will pass the test after consuming this potent THC analog. There is still some lack of evidence on this subject as more research is underway.

How much time does THC-P take to come into effect?

The time that certain Cannabinoids take to kick in depends on how a person consumes them. Cannabinoids are present in many forms, and one may take them either orally, sublingually, or even through inhalation. For instance, if you are taking THC-P orally, i.e., by THC-P gummies, you may expect it to elicit effects in an hour. The effects are long-lasting because of the strong binding nature of THC-P. Thus, the effects increase over time and peak by the 3rd hour after consumption. Even the peak effects sustain for two hours before they start tapering off. The cumulative period during which the effect can be felt is four to six hours.

It takes much less time to achieve effects if THC-P is inhaled through THC-P vape carts. That is because it directly goes to capillaries, in that case from where it directly absorbs in blood. Thus, it reaches the Cannabinoid receptors each time the heart pumps blood. In this case, you may start feeling effects in 15 minutes that peak around one hour. The effects start fading about 2 hours later, and thus, the total experience is of three to five hours.

Topical effects are the slowest of all since the product does not reach the receptors readily when applied to the skin.

Which THC-P Products are available in the Market?

Mountain Strong Hemp Company is currently designing the following THC-P products:

  • THC-P Vape carts
  • THC-P Distillates
  • THC-P Concentrates (THC-P Shatter, THC-P Crumble, THC-P Rosin)
  • THC-P Gummies

THC-P is the target of companies that deal in highly psychoactive compounds. More research on this Cannabinoid is in process, so we may expect even the state and federal laws to mention it in the legislature in the coming years.

THC-P is difficult to get because of its lesser availability, but people who have experienced its effects relate them to THC.

It is a Cannabinoid of the future-waiting for its turn to rock the world!
